Avior - Blog : Solana 2025 Recap: SOL Goes Institutional After Outgrowing Meme Coin Phase

The biggest Breakpoint conference to date concluded on Dec. 13 in futuristic Abu Dhabi after a three-day affair with a flashy drone show, a $250,000 crypto airdrop raining down from the desert sky, and a slew of announcements that amplified the message that Solana is growing up, and stepping up.

For the second year in a row, Solana won the chain wars, capturing nearly 27% of global attention across chain-specific crypto narratives in 2025. With this mindshare came the inevitable tsunami of scammers and hackers, stealing over $250M from Solana users in H1 2025, accounting for 15% of all crypto losses (excluding the Bybit hack).

The Solana ecosystem’s market cap slipped 47% YTD from $330 billion to $173 billion. Trading volume performed in the same fashion, tanking 90% to just below $11 billion.

But Solana’s year was wrapped in key and very bullish milestones that could make Solana great again in 2026. (Please don’t meme that, Donald.)

Top Solana Stories of 2025 1. Solana ETFs Approved! #WenSOLETF? That was the refrain heard across Crypto Twitter all year. The launch of U.S. spot Solana ETFs in late November and corporate treasury allocations legitimized Solana in traditional capital markets.

Since receiving SEC approval, several spot Solana ETFs launched in the U.S. in late 2025, with major ones like Bitwise (BSOL) on NYSE and 21Shares (TSOL) on Cboe BZX starting trading after passing final regulatory steps and overcoming a government shutdown delay, making SOL accessible to U.S. investors through regulated products. Despite this, the price of Solana’s native asset kept sliding. However, TradFi is taking note: Treasury firms have staked at least 12.5 million SOL, accounting for more than 3% of its current supply. With nearly $750M in AUM and sustained inflows, ETFs fundamentally changed SOL’s investor base, liquidity profile, and institutional legitimacy.

2. Stablecoin and RWA Adoption Accelerates Solana emerged as the leading chain for tokenized real-world assets as its real-world assets (RWA)growth outpaced Ethereum. BlackRock’s BUIDL fund, on-chain treasuries, and tokenized equities proved Solana could host regulated, institutional-grade financial products at scale.

Stablecoin adoption has been a massive driver this year, and Solana’s stablecoin supply rose significantly in 2025 to reach nearly $17 billion. Key TradFi giants such as Western Union are planning to or have already launched their stablecoins on Solana.

3. The Presidential Meme Coin Shock Donald Trump's reelection as U.S. President ignited the crypto base, with Solana hitting its peak just a day before Trump's inauguration. The surge was driven in part by the launch of the TRUMP (TRUMP) meme coin, the controversial Melania (MELANIA) coin, and copycats on the network.

4. Pump.fun’s $1.3B ICO Pump.fun changed crypto this year forever, breaking down the barriers to token creation and becoming a factory for churning out new meme tokens, of which 99% soon went to zero. It was without a doubt one of the most influential crypto apps in 2025.

Its sold-out PUMP (PUMP) ICO, launched months after its crazy ascent, raised $600 million in 12 minutes. Pump.fun cemented Solana’s dominance in token launches and retail trading infrastructure, while also creating ongoing tensions between speculation, fairness, and sustainability. With a huge war chest in a muted market, it will be interesting to see what its next moves will be in 2026.

5. The Digital Asset Treasury (DAT) Arms Race Public companies raced to accumulate SOL ahead of ETF launches, issuing bonds to buy billions in tokens. By year-end, falling SOL prices left many DATs underwater, raising doubts about the sustainability of the strategy despite holdings exceeding 20M SOL.

6. Hardware: Solana Seeker and PlaySolana Finally Ship Solana Mobile delivered the long-awaited Seeker phone, onboarding tens of thousands of verified users. The device laid the foundation for the upcoming SKR token economy (airdrop in Q1 2026) and expanded Solana’s mobile stack beyond first-party hardware.
